AFCON 2023: Host Nation Ivory Coast Deports Algerian Influencer For Ridiculing Country

Sofia Benlemmane, an Algerian influencer, was deported from Cote d’Ivoire for making fun of the host nation at the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON).
She used disparaging words while filming some of the impoverished parts of the nation, which led to her imprisonment and eventual deportation and being banned from the country for life.
Sofia Benlemmane posted a video on social media that disparaged the Ivory Coast and made a negative comparison between it and her home country of Algeria. The video said:
“They live in misery here. I recorded a video yesterday at the bus station, and it’s the worst, like the prehistoric era. If I had some powers, I would have brought Algerians here to witness this.”
“What a difference with Algeria! Long live Algeria. I thank God for giving me a country like Algeria. Normally, Algeria is not supposed to be in Africa. It was supposed to be situated between Portugal and Spain.”
Watch the video below.
Her detention was viewed as a means of combating instances of xenophobia, as there had been reports of tension or prejudice based on nationality throughout the competition.
The sports event has mostly proceeded without any significant incidents or disturbances, and the organisers are eager to celebrate diversity while fostering togetherness among participants.
Many people took to social media to share their thoughts on the incident as it was shared on the social media site X, formerly Twitter by Africa Facts Zone. Tales Of Africa samples some comments below.
@PaulPositive4 commented:
“North Africans don’t consider themselves Africans. Can they just break away and let us be? They should be allowed to form their own continent or join EU or Asia”.
@PappyJames2 remarked:
“We are not begging anyone to stay. Join Spain, we won’t miss you”
@djstago said:
“The scenes outside those stadiums leave much to be desired. Our journalists are going through hell as we speak.
Hopefully, this tournament brings hope and restores the dignity of Ivorians 🙏💯”
@Ghislaintweets opined:
“I’m from Cameroon but I think the decision was harsh. Algerians often see themselves as superiors yet let’s take the message and forget about the messenger. Is Cote d’Ivoire developed? Is Algeria better? Well, you have your answers.”
