OSIBISA – Welcome Home (Lessons To Be Learned)

OSIBISA is a band that was formed in London in 1969 by three Ghanaians and three Caribbean musicians. They played a cardinal role in developing an awareness of African music among European and North American audiences in the 70’s.

During the late 70s they spent much of their time on world tours, playing to particularly large audiences in Japan, India, Australia and Africa. In 1980, Osibisa performed at a special Zimbabwean independence celebration, and in 1983 were filmed onstage at the Marquee Club in London.

Some of OSIBISA’s hit songs include Sunshine Day, Woyaya and Welcome Home. Their songs were thought-provoking and always put Africa on the world map.

Ghana has taken the initiative to become the centre of celebrations for “The Year of Return 2019”, which is to commemorate 400 years since the first Black slave reached the shores of the United States of America. The Year of Return is basically to encourage our brothers and sisters of the African family to return to Ghana and for that matter Africa to invest and help develop their roots.

Tales of Africa will like to dedicate Osibisa’s “Welcome Home” to all our family in the diaspora, and much more than that, urge fellow Africans to “come back home” by reinstating Africa to its former glorious state. Let us move on together in unity, welcoming the spirit of togetherness, passion and excellence which was evident in our forefathers.

Let us say enough to mediocrity, apathy, corruption and songs that only encourage twerking and abuse of drugs.

Below is the powerful lyrics of Osibisa’s “Welcome Home.”

“You’ve been gone it’s an empty home
Come on back when you’re ready to know
You are always welcome home

You’ve been kept down for much too long
Stand up please and say I am free
Don’t forget you are welcome home

Come with me
On this happy trip back to the Promise Land
All will be happy again
Come with me
On this happy trip back to the Promise Land
All will be happy again…”
