Kevin Hart Confesses – “I Have Been Lied To About Africa”

Popular American comedian Kevin Hart has accused the mainstream media of distorting his perspective of Africa. He said that when he went, the reality was quite different. He didn’t feel the need to be on guard; rather, he felt at home.

He asserts that the media, which effectively runs a negative PR campaign, perpetuates a false and destructive perception of Africa by emphasising only the unpleasant events that occur.

Kevin Hart speaks about his views on Africa

In an interview with African Stream, Kevin Hart confessed: “They don’t show the beautiful picture of Johannesburg in the media. They don’t show a beautiful picture of Cape Town in the media. When people show things in the media, they are always shown in a negative light.

So, when something about Africa is talked about, it is normally bad, it is normally violent…or where a disease broke and it’s never good. So, your perception is what people have forced you to believe.

Until you get the heart to go ‘I’m going, I want to see for myself”, you don’t know. So all I know is what the news says so in my mind, I’m like ‘Hey man, I’m not trying to go over and get kidnapped, okay?’ I am saying it from what I have seen.

But I go and I see an amazing city and we are blown away by seeing fans and people that are like ‘Yo, we love your music’…why not show us that?

Why not show the entertainers that love to give back that love to embrace their fans and that love to be part of charitable things? Why not show us the amazing stuff that’s over here so that when we get here, we see for ourselves and then our senses are enhanced and we not only want to come back but we want to come back and be involved with things that you have going on.

But until we get the heart as artists and we spread that rumour ourselves, we don’t know. And to be honest, we are a community, and that’s how I ended up coming over. I know Nicki, I know Beyonce, I know Jay-Z. I talk to them…’ Hey guys, is there anything to worry about?’

So now that I’m here, I’m like ‘This is ridiculous, I don’t need sh*t, I’m fine. It’s a city and I feel like I’m in New York. I felt like I was in Malibu the other day. It’s the same, exact thing and it is frustrating because it makes me go to question you as the media.

The media had the chance to put out the positive side of where you are and where you live.”
